However, when you generate ebook and PDF exports, Pressbooks automatically generates some parts of your book, depending on the book format you're creating and the settings you have chosen. In this chapter, we'll cover what content is created automatically and how to change or modify it. By default, this title page must include the title of your book and the author's name. Depending on how much information you've entered into the <strong>Book Info\u00a0<\/strong>page, the title page will include:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Title<\/li>\n \t<li>Subtitle<\/li>\n \t<li>Author<\/li>\n \t<li>Publisher<\/li>\n \t<li>Publisher city<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Making a Custom Title Page<\/h2>\nIf you'd like to override the automatic title page, you can create a custom title page. Ebook distributors will require that your book has a table of contents before it can be accepted for publication. The table of contents can be disabled for the PDF format so that it does not appear in your print books.\n\nTo enable or disable the table of contents in your PDF files:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Go to\u00a0<strong>Appearance &gt; Theme Options\u00a0<\/strong>from the left sidebar menu<\/li>\n \t<li>Select the '<strong>PDF Options<\/strong>' tab<\/li>\n \t<li>Select or deselect the '<strong>Display table of contents<\/strong>' option as desired\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-351\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.pub\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4748\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-from-2021-10-06-13-11-37.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"129\"><\/li>\n \t<li>Save your changes and re-export your files<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1><a id=\"numerationandrunningcontent\" href=\"\"><\/a>Numeration and\u00a0Running Content<\/h1>\nPage numbers, parts, and chapters all get automatically numbered throughout your book in various formats. Pressbooks also generates running headers or footers in all PDF files.\n<h2><a id=\"partandchapternumbers\" href=\"\"><\/a>Part and Chapter Numbers<\/h2>\nBy default, Pressbooks automatically generates part and chapter numbers for your book. These are visible in all book formats. These numbers display on part and chapter title pages as well as on the table of contents. The design of part and chapter numbers will depend on the theme you've chosen.\n\nTo globally disable all part and chapter numbers:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Go to\u00a0<strong>Appearance &gt; Theme Options\u00a0<\/strong>from the left sidebar menu<\/li>\n \t<li>Select the\u00a0<strong>Global Options\u00a0<\/strong>tab<\/li>\n \t<li>Select or deselect the '<strong>Part and Chapter Numbers<\/strong>' checkbox as desired\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-352\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.pub\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4748\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-from-2021-10-06-13-13-38.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"180\"><\/li>\n \t<li>Save your changes and re-export your files<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nYou can also disable numbers on each chapter individually by choosing \"Numberless\" from the Chapter Type panel beneath the Status &amp; Visibility widget.\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-353\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.pub\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4748\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-from-2021-10-06-13-14-31.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"157\">\n<h2><a id=\"pagenumbers\" href=\"\"><\/a>Page Numbers<\/h2>\nPressbooks automatically creates page numbers for all PDF files. Page numbers cannot be disabled using any setting in Pressbooks. Generally, front matter page numbers will display in lower Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) until the Introduction page. All body and back matter pages will be numbered in Arabic (1, 2, 3) numerals. Page number design will depend on the theme you've chosen.\n\nPage numbers will automatically reflow whenever you add or remove content, change your theme, or adjust other elements of the design.\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong>NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>Page numbers do not appear in EPUB files. Pressbooks does not create fixed-format ebooks, which means content will reflow depending on a reader's device, software, and display settings.<\/div>\n<h2><a id=\"runningContent\" href=\"\"><\/a>Running Content<\/h2>\nAll themes have running content included in the template for the PDF. Depending on the theme you've chosen, that running content may be in the header or the footer. You can customize your running content by following these steps:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Go to <strong>Appearance &gt; Theme Options\u00a0<\/strong>from the left sidebar menu<\/li>\n \t<li>Select the\u00a0<strong>PDF Options\u00a0<\/strong>tab<\/li>\n \t<li>Make the adjustments you'd like for each relevant page location in the \"Running Heads &amp; Feet\" section\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-354\" style=\"font-family: 'Cormorant Garamond', serif; font-size: 1.80225em; font-weight: bold; word-spacing: normal;\" src=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.pub\/app\/uploads\/sites\/4748\/2022\/10\/Screenshot-from-2021-10-06-14-13-52.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"748\" height=\"790\"><\/li>\n \t<li>Save your changes and re-export your files<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nWhen you select any of the preset options (except \u201cBlank\u201d or \u201cCustom\u201d) you will see a short piece of code appear in the field below the dropdown menu (i.e. %section_title% or %part_title%). These are visible in all book formats. These numbers display on part and chapter title pages as well as on the table of contents. All body and back matter pages will be numbered in Arabic (1, 2, 3) numerals. Page number design will depend on the theme you&#8217;ve chosen.<\/p>\n<p>Page numbers will automatically reflow whenever you add or remove content, change your theme, or adjust other elements of the design.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong>NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>Page numbers do not appear in EPUB files. Depending on the theme you&#8217;ve chosen, that running content may be in the header or the footer.
