In the book publishing industry, this is called \"metadata\"\u2014<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>or, data about the data. Metadata allows book stores and libraries categorize a book and make it easier for readers to find. It\u00a0answers questions such as:\u00a0<em>What is the title? Who is the author? When was it published? <\/em>And <em>what is the book about?<\/em>\n\nSome pieces of metadata are required and will be filled in by default using the information you entered when you first registered your account and created a book. The title will be included in your automatically generated title page, half-title page, and webbook homepage. It may also be in the running content of your PDF files. The title is also <strong>required<\/strong>\u00a0for the metadata that goes into your EPUB file.\n\n<strong>Short Title:<\/strong>\u00a0A shorter version of your title can be entered if your full book title is too long for the running content in your PDFs. This field is <strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Subtitle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like the title, this information will automatically populate the title page and webbook homepage if entered. The use of a subtitle is <strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Author: <\/strong>The author name is used to populate the automatically generated title page and webbook landing page.\u00a0It's also included in the metadata file in your ebook. This field is <strong>required<\/strong>, and will default to your Pressbooks username if nothing is entered.\n\n<b>Editor, Translator, Reviewer, Illustrator,\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<strong>Contributor:\u00a0<\/strong>These metadata fields can be filled in to properly credit the contributions of individuals who filled specific roles in the creation of the book. All contributor fields except for Author are <strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"#Contributors\">Click here to learn how to add new contributors.<\/a>\n\n<strong>Publisher:<\/strong>\u00a0Publisher information will appear on the automatically generated title page in exported files and on the webbook homepage. The metadata will also be included in your ebook files. This field is\u00a0<strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Publisher City:<\/strong> Publishing conventions list the city or cities where the publisher operates on the title page of a book. The publisher city will be included in the automatically generated title page in exported files and on the webbook homepage. This field is <strong>optional<\/strong><em>.<\/em>\n\n<strong>Publication Date: <\/strong>The date the book is to be, or was published on. The publication date will be included on the webbook homepage. This field is\u00a0<strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>On-sale Date:<\/strong> The date the book will go on sale. This field is\u00a0<strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Ebook ISBN:<\/strong> An ISBN or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Standard_Book_Number\">\"international standard book number\"<\/a>\u00a0is a number assigned to your book that is unique, and it allows all bookstores across the world to know certain important things about your book, including: title, author, publisher, publication date. \u00a0The ebook ISBN is added to the metadata file in your ebook, and is included in the webbook homepage. This field is <strong>optional\u00a0<\/strong>on Pressbooks, but may be required by your ebook distributor. For more details on how to acquire an ISBN, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/indieauthorsguide.pressbooks.com\/chapter\/other-things-you-need-to-make-your-own-book-optional-isbns-etc\/\">Guide to Self-Publishing<\/a>.\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0Requirements for ISBNs are dependent on the country in which you live or publish the book. Be sure to check what's required for your country before you purchase your ISBN.<\/div>\n<strong>Print ISBN:<\/strong> See above for a description of ISBNs. Note that each <em>format<\/em> of a book (print, ebook, audiobook) must have its own ISBN.\u00a0This field is\u00a0<strong>optional.<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Digital Object Identifier (DOI):<\/strong> Insert your book\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.org\/faq.html\">DOI<\/a>, a handle used to uniquely identify digital objects. DOIs are commonly used for academic publications. The DOI will display in the Metadata section of the webbook homepage. The DOI field is\u00a0<strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Language:<\/strong> Set the language of your book and its metadata. Changing the language of a book changes certain automatically generated terms throughout the book, including words like \"Chapter\" or \"Contents\". Language strings may not change if they have not yet been translated into your chosen language in our system. The book's metadata language will also affect your Pressbooks interface language if your user profile Language setting is set to Site Default. For more information, see our guide chapter on <a href=\"\/iotb\/chapter\/languages\/\">Languages<\/a>. This field is\u00a0<strong>required<\/strong><em>, <\/em>and defaults to English<em>.<\/em>\n<h3><a id=\"Cover\" href=\"\"><\/a>Cover<\/h3>\nUpload an image of the front cover of your book in this section. The cover image will display in the following locations:\n<ul>\n \t<li>EPUB files<\/li>\n \t<li>MOBI files<\/li>\n \t<li>The webbook homepage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nCover images should have a 1:1.5 aspect ratio. Recommended dimensions are 2500px by 3750px. The maximum upload size of images is 2MB. Adding a cover image is\u00a0optional; however, the Pressbooks logo will be displayed by default if you do not include a custom cover.\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong>NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>The cover image is <strong>not <\/strong>included in print or digital PDF files. PDF files are designed as interior files only, as many print and print-on-demand services require cover files to be submitted separately.<\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"Subject\" href=\"\"><\/a>Subject<\/h3>\nAdding <strong>optional<\/strong>\u00a0subject categories to your book can help with search engine optimization (SEO), especially if your focus is primarily on distributing a public webbook on Pressbooks. These subject categories can also be used to sort your book on the public Catalog page of any PressbooksEDU network.\n\nSubject categories are built on\u00a0EDItEUR's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editeur.org\/151\/Thema\">Thema<\/a> standards, a subject category scheme for the global book trade.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_2583\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"592\"]<a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/10270\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-16-at-2.30.49-PM.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-182 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/openbook.ums.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/183\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-16-at-2.30.49-PM.png\" alt=\"The Subject section on the Book Info page\" width=\"592\" height=\"310\"><\/a> The <strong>Subject<\/strong> panel on the Book Info page[\/caption]\n<h3><a id=\"Copyright\" href=\"\"><\/a>Copyright<\/h3>\nA copyright notice is\u00a0<strong>required<\/strong> for all books. Pressbooks generates a default copyright notice for all book formats, which will include your book's title and the author name and set the copyright license to All Rights Reserved.\n\nYou can add the following information in the Copyright section to include in the automatically generated copyright notice:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Copyright year<\/li>\n \t<li>Name of the copyright holder<\/li>\n \t<li>Copyright license (including <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\">Creative Commons (CC) licenses<\/a>, which allow copyright holders to grant others free permissions to use their work in various ways)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nYou can also create a custom copyright notice that overrides the default notice created by Pressbooks. Any content entered into\u00a0<strong>Copyright Notice\u00a0<\/strong>section will override the automatically generated statement when an All Rights Reserved license is chosen, or be added to the generated statement when another license is chosen.\n\nFor more information, see the guide chapter <a href=\"\/iotb\/chapter\/copyright-page\/\">Copyright Page<\/a>.\n<h3><a id=\"AbouttheBook\" href=\"\"><\/a>About the Book<\/h3>\nDescriptions explaining what your book is about will be included on the webbook homepage and in the metadata of your ebook files. All information in this section is optional to include.\n\n<strong>Book Tagline:<\/strong> This is a very short, one-line sentence that explains why someone should read your book. Ideally, the tagline is something that would fit in a tweet.\n\n<strong>Short Description: <\/strong>A short paragraph describing your book. Think of this as the description you would read on a catalog page with ten other books.\n\n<strong>Long Description:<\/strong>\u00a0 A longer paragraph about your book that can also include reviews, praise, blurbs, etc.\n<h3><a id=\"additionalcataloginformation\" href=\"\"><\/a>Additional Catalog Information<\/h3>\nClick the <strong>Show Additional Book Information\u00a0<\/strong>button at the top of the\u00a0Book Info page to open the Additional Catalog Information section.\u00a0Enter more\u00a0<strong>optional\u00a0<\/strong>information about your book:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Series title<\/li>\n \t<li>Series number<\/li>\n \t<li>Editor<\/li>\n \t<li>Translator<\/li>\n \t<li>Keywords<\/li>\n \t<li>Hashtag<\/li>\n \t<li>List price<\/li>\n \t<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bisg.org\/page\/BISACSubjectCodes\">BISAC<\/a> Subjects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nFor a quick overview on adding your book metadata in Pressbooks, watch this <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/r7aAOuYLSs0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video on adding metadata using Book Info<\/a>.\n\n&nbsp;\n\nhttp:\/\/youtu.be\/r7aAOuYLSs0\n<h1><a id=\"Contributors\" href=\"\"><\/a>Contributors<\/h1>\nContributors are anyone who had a role in the creation of the book. The name will be added to the front matter or Book Info section for each book format.\n<h3><a id=\"editingacontributor\" href=\"\"><\/a>Editing a Contributor<\/h3>\nTo edit a contributor, follow these steps:\n<ol>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navigate to the Contributors page (<strong>Book Info &gt; Contributors<\/strong>).<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the contributor list, click the name of the contributor you\u2019d like to change. This field is <strong>required<\/strong>, and will default to your Pressbooks username if nothing is entered.<\/p>\n<p><b>Editor, Translator, Reviewer, Illustrator,\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<strong>Contributor:\u00a0<\/strong>These metadata fields can be filled in to properly credit the contributions of individuals who filled specific roles in the creation of the book. This field is\u00a0<strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ebook ISBN:<\/strong> An ISBN or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Standard_Book_Number\">&#8220;international standard book number&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0is a number assigned to your book that is unique, and it allows all bookstores across the world to know certain important things about your book, including: title, author, publisher, publication date. \u00a0The ebook ISBN is added to the metadata file in your ebook, and is included in the webbook homepage. This field is <strong>optional\u00a0<\/strong>on Pressbooks, but may be required by your ebook distributor. Note that each <em>format<\/em> of a book (print, ebook, audiobook) must have its own ISBN.\u00a0This field is\u00a0<strong>optional.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital Object Identifier (DOI):<\/strong> Insert your book\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.org\/faq.html\">DOI<\/a>, a handle used to uniquely identify digital objects. DOIs are commonly used for academic publications. The DOI will display in the Metadata section of the webbook homepage. The DOI field is\u00a0<strong>optional.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Language:<\/strong> Set the language of your book and its metadata. Changing the language of a book changes certain automatically generated terms throughout the book, including words like &#8220;Chapter&#8221; or &#8220;Contents&#8221;. Language strings may not change if they have not yet been translated into your chosen language in our system. The book&#8217;s metadata language will also affect your Pressbooks interface language if your user profile Language setting is set to Site Default. This field is\u00a0<strong>required<\/strong><em>, <\/em>and defaults to English<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"Cover\" href=\"\"><\/a>Cover<\/h3>\n<p>Upload an image of the front cover of your book in this section. All information in this section is optional to include.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Book Tagline:<\/strong> This is a very short, one-line sentence that explains why someone should read your book. Ideally, the tagline is something that would fit in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Short Description: <\/strong>A short paragraph describing your book. Then, save the <strong>Book Info<\/strong> page. The name will be added to the front matter or Book Info section for each book format.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"editingacontributor\" href=\"\"><\/a>Editing a Contributor<\/h3>\n<p>To edit a contributor, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navigate to the Contributors page (<strong>Book Info &gt; Contributors<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the contributor list, click the name of the contributor you\u2019d like to change.
